P/F Allowed

New Policy

Major and minor students may take courses P/F.

Policy Statement

In light of the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19, the Cinema and Media Studies Department will adopt the following grading policy for courses that students intend to count toward their Major or Minor requirements:

Students will be permitted to count *up to two courses* taken Pass/Fail toward their CMST Major or Minor; this number is cumulative over the duration of the program, but does not include any course taken P/F in Spring 2020. For any course a student wishes to take Pass/Fail in Autumn 2020, they should provide a brief written explanation to the instructor of the course by Monday, December 7.

If a student faces extraordinary circumstances in the future relating to COVID-19 and/or remote learning, they may petition the department to have additional courses taken for Pass/Fail credit count toward the Major or Minor. The petition should provide an explanation of the circumstances, and it should be sent to *both* the course instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies (currently Professor Salomé Skvirsky: skvirsky@uchicago.edu).
